Slaughter Slough is a wetland in southwestern Minnesota, United States, so named for being the site of the Lake Shetek Massacre during the Dakota War of 1862. It is located in Murray County east of Lake Shetek. On August 20, 1862, about 40 Dakota men attacked the Euro-American settlers living nearby, killing 15 and taking a dozen women and children captive. 21 settlers escaped or survived the attack and made difficult journeys across the prairie to safety. A band of pacifist Dakota later ransomed the eight surviving captives, who were reunited with their families.

Today the site is managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as Slaughter Slough Waterfowl Production Area, a component of the Windom Wetland Management District. It is developed with interpretive signage, a short trail, and a memorial.

The Lake Shetek settlement ~

About 50 Euro-American settlers from perhaps a dozen families were living along the east shore of Lake Shetek in August 1862. They were quite isolated, 40 miles (64 km) from the nearest settlement and even farther from any sizeable town; it was over 60 miles (97 km) east to New Ulm or 70 miles (110 km) southwest to Sioux Falls.

The first homesteaders arrived in 1855. By 1862 at least 9 families had cabins spread along 5 miles (8.0 km) of lakeshore. Listed roughly north to south they were the Meyers, the Hurds, the Kochs, the Irelands, the Eastlicks, the Duleys, the Smiths, the Wrights, and the Everetts. There were also a few single men.

The settlers interacted and traded with the local Dakota people. Some even spoke the Dakota language passably.

The Dakota ~

The growing Euro-American population, however, was making it increasingly difficult for the easternmost Dakota people to pursue their traditional lifestyle. Resettlement on reservations, treaty violations by the United States, and late or unfair annuity payments by Indian agents caused increasing hunger and hardship among the Dakota. Pushed to the breaking point, a council of Dakota leaders decided to wage war on the whites on August 17, 1862.

The declaration of war reached White Lodge and Lean Grizzly Bear, the chiefs of two bands living northwest of Lake Shetek. Their villages were Sisseton Dakota, a sub-tribe still living beyond the frontier that had not been signatory to any treaties with the United States. About 40 warriors and at least a few women set out to help combat white encroachment on their land. A third Sisseton band, headed by Old Pawn, was camped near the Wrights' cabin at the south end of the Lake Shetek settlement.

The attack begins ~

On the morning of Wednesday, August 20, 1862, the Dakota entered the settlement from the north. At the first cabin they simply trampled through the cornfield and vandalized a fence, leaving the Meyers family perplexed but unharmed. At the next cabin, the Hurds', darker tidings revealed themselves. Phineas Hurd and another settler were long overdue from scouting land in Dakota Territory. Now his wife Alomina recognized that one of the Dakota men was riding her husband's horse. Some of the men followed her into the cabin, which woke one of the Hurds' two children. John Voigt, whom Mr. Hurd had hired to work in his absence, carried the crying toddler outside. Without warning one of the Dakota shot Voigt dead (though the child was unharmed). Many more Dakota men then leapt out of hiding and looted the cabin.

Mrs. Hurd was told that she and the children would be spared if she didn't warn the other settlers. Refusing them additional food or clothing, some Dakota men escorted the Hurds 3 miles (4.8 km) from home and pointed them in the direction of New Ulm.

The Dakota next arrived at the cabin of Andreas and Mariah Koch (pronounced "Cook"), immigrants from Germany with no children. Andreas was asked to bring water from the well and was then shot from behind. Mariah, emerging from the cabin, was told to flee, and ran toward a neighbor's without interference.

John Voigt and Andreas Koch were the only people killed within the settlement. Voigt had recently angered some Dakota, and Koch had poor relations with them due to his broken English. Conversely both Andrew Meyers and Alomina Hurd had been friendly towards the Dakota and spoke their language, which she credited for her and her children being spared. At the beginning of the attack the victims may have been the target of specific grudges.

The settlers flee ~

Two chance visitors to the Hurd cabin spread the alarm about the coming attack. Charlie Hatch was living with his sister Almira Everett and her family at the south end of the settlement. Coming to borrow the Hurds' oxen, he instead found John Voigt's body and the looted cabin. Running back to tell the others, he saw the mob of Dakota around the Koch homestead. Meanwhile, the Meyers cabin at the north end of the settlement had so far been bypassed by the war party. Mrs. Meyers was quite sick with pneumonia, so 10-year-old Arthur had been sent to the Hurds to ask for some bread. When he returned with the news of the violence done there, Mr. Meyers went to warn the Kochs. Instead he found Andreas dead and heard the Dakota men nearby, so rushed back and hustled his family of six into their wagon to flee.

Hatch rushed through the settlement warning all the others, accelerated by a horse lent to him by the Eastlicks' boarder Mr. Rhodes. The settlers decided to gather at the most defensible structure, the two-story Wright house built on higher ground.

As the settlers gathered at the Wright home they encountered Old Pawn and members of his band, who were camped nearby and well-known to the whites. Old Pawn offered to fight on their side. The 34 settlers and 8 Dakota crowded into the Wright home and prepared their paltry defenses. The whites argued about strategy and whether they should trust Old Pawn's Dakota men.

The men fired a volley when the hostile Dakota came in view, and Old Pawn offered to negotiate with them. He returned with this deal: abandon the settlement and their belongings and the whites would be spared. The settlers argued and ultimately held a vote, accepting the offer. The group started for New Ulm in a wagon and on foot.

Taking cover in the slough ~

After the settlers had proceeded a mile or two, the Dakota men appeared behind them in hot pursuit. Old Pawn was among them. Henry Smith and Mr. Rhodes panicked and ran, though William Duley shouted at them to stay or at least leave their guns. Rhodes was a bachelor boarding with the Eastlicks, but Smith abandoned his own wife.

Duley suggested the party take cover in a nearby slough, reed-filled and mostly dry in late summer. On the way the parties exchanged fire, and several settlers were wounded.

After this, the Dakota men began killing the settlers: fifteen settlers, including three of Duley's children, were killed and Duley's wife and seven others were taken captive.

Aftermath ~

The captive settlers were freed four months later when other white settlers ran across a group of Dakota with the captives and traded supplies for their freedom. Abraham Lincoln authorized the execution of the Dakota involved in the massacre and kidnapping. William Duley was the executioner at the hanging of thirty-eight Dakota on December 26.

Those that were involved in defending their families and friends that day in 1862 at Slaughter Slough included;

Edgar Bently: who moved to the lake in the fall of 1861, and was staying with the Myers through the winter. He was a miller by trade and was to begin the erection of Everetts mill on the day of the outbreak. He escaped from the slough and was taken to Dutch Charley. Once there he enlisted in the army and was never heard from again.

- William Jones: Lived with the Hurd family in 1859, till he moved just 2 miles northwest of them. He held the land between them from Fremont to Bloody Lake. Only 2 months before the massacre Jones and the Hurd family had moved another 2 miles away, but one of the Indians had his horse and supposedly killed them all that day.

- William Everett: He and his wife and 3 children had settled on the south side of the Beaver, later owned by Neil Currie. Everett was severely wounded the day of the massacre at the slough, but afterwards was aided by Charley Hatch. Mrs. Everett and Willie were killed after surrendering to the Indians. The youngest was just a baby and left to the breast of his dead mother. Lilly was captured by the Indians and later rescued at Camp Release.

- Henry W. Smith: Settled at the lake in 1855, with his wife and no children. Smith escaped from the slough and made his way to Walnut Grove to warn others, Although his wife was killed at the slough. Later he was married to Mrs. Eastlick.

- William J. Duley: With his wife and 5 children he settled at the lake in 1858. Duley was wounded through the wrist in the fight at the slough but managed to make his escape. Mrs. Duley was made a captive as well as 2 of the children, but released at Pierre. The others were killed at the lake. Some time after, Duley cut the rope at the hanging of 38 Indians in Mankato on December 26, 1862.

- Charles Hatch: Came to the lake in 1862, living with the Everett family. About 25 years old, he warned all the settlers of the attack that was about to take place. During the battle he was shot many times. Six weeks later he and an Ireland returned to the land to bury the dead.

- E. G. Kock: He came to the lake in 1861, but at the time of the massacre he and Voigt had made their way to New Ulm and took part in the defense there. A member of the rescuing party he helped find Mrs. Hurd and Mrs. Eastlick and their children. He was later made mayor of New Ulm.

- John Wright: With his wife and 2 children, he settled at the lake in 1859. It was at the Wright family's cabin that the settlers of the area took shelter after they found out that the Indians had deceived them, and made way to New Ulm. Wright was absent at the time of the outbreak and had left Ireland in charge of the family and farm. Mrs. Wright and the children were taken captives at the slough and rescued at Pierre.

- Thomas Ireland: Came to the lake in 1861, with his wife and four children. He was wounded at Slaughter Slough and left for dead by the Indians, but he was able to escape. He reached New Ulm, after walking 75 miles, and going 5 days without food. Two of his daughters were taken captive by Chief Redwood, but were released at Pierre. His wife and other two daughters were killed after they surrendered at Slaughter Slough.

- John Renniker: He was an agent for the Dakota Land Company, and lived with the Myers family at Saratoga. His post office at the time was in New Ulm. He went there for supplies and on the way back was murdered by the Indians, Northeast of Walnut Grove.

- Aaron Myers: He was called the "doctor" because he treated with success, several of the Indians who had sore eyes. The Myers family escaped from the lake before the slaughter of the settlers began. Mrs. Myers was very ill with pneumonia, and died on their way to Mankato.

- Eastlicks: The Eastlick family was made up of John, the father, Mrs. L. Eastlick, the mother, and the 5 children; Merton, 11 yrs, Freddy, 4 yrs, Frank, Giles 2yrs, and Johnny, 15 months. John Eastlick was murdered at the slough along with 3 of their children, Freddy, Frank, and Giles. Mrs. Eastlick was badly hurt during the battle, but made it out alive. Later to find out that her other 2 sons were still alive and had traveled 50 miles to New Ulm to find help and safety. Merton had carried his youngest brother that distance, 50 miles.

Helen Mar Paddock Carrothers Tarble

Helen was born in Wisconsin to parents Thomas and Laura Paddock, both natives of Vermont. She was named after heroine Lady Helen Mar from the historic novel 'The Scottish Chiefs' by Jane Porter, first published in 1810. Beginning with Helen Mar Paddock, the name carried through four generations of daughters: Helen Mar McNanney (1873-1912), Helen Mar Riddle (1898-1950), and Helen Mar Johnston (1929-2010). In Oct. 1856, when she was only 13 years old, Helen married James Carrothers, age 26. In 1857, following a move to Winona, MN, the couple moved to the southwest quarter of section 22 in Beaver Falls Township, Renville County MN, six miles from the Lower Sioux Indian Agency, where Mr. Carrothers was employed as a carpenter. They were some of the first white residents of the area, known as the Beaver Creek settlement, and here their children Althea and Thomas were born; Helen was only 15 years old when she gave birth to Althea. Mr. Carrothers could be away from home for several days at a time, so Helen became acquainted with the Dakota Indians and learned their language. The medicine man was fond of Helen and taught her how to gather herbs and use them to make medicine, and she would go with him to nurse the sick. By the summer of 1862, the number of white settlers in the area had grown, and many of the Dakota were angry with the results of treaties ,and with conditions at the reservation. It all boiled over on August 18, 1862, when Indians attacked the whites at Lower Sioux Agency and at the settlements in the region, killing hundreds, and taking over one hundred (mostly women and children) as prisoners. When word of the uprising reached the Beaver Creek settlement, several residents gathered at the Jonathan Earle claim where they made plans to go to Ft. Ridgely for protection. They traveled just a short distance when they were surrounded by Indians who began shooting at them. Some in the group were killed, some escaped, and the rest, women and children, including Helen and her two children (her husband was away at the time), were captured. All were first taken to Chief Little Crow's village. Helen and her children managed to escape from this camp, and, after a perilous journey lasting eight days, they reached Ft. Ridgely. In time, refugees at the fort were taken to St. Peter and then to St. Paul. In early September, Helen traveled to La Crosse, WI to visit her parents who were overjoyed to learn that she was still alive. She remained with them through the winter months to recover from exhaustion and other effects of her captivity and escape. In April, James rejoined Helen and they moved to St. Paul where he worked as a pattern maker in a foundry, and she boarded the men who worked with him. They were there for just two months before moving to St. Peter. By this time they were having problems with their marriage. Many years later Helen would write, "After my capture by the Indians, there was discord between me and my husband, and at St. Peter we agreed to disagree." Following their divorce, he joined the First Wisconsin Battery of Light Artillery and went to the South, and she went to work for Joseph and Valencia Reynolds, keepers of the Northwestern Hotel in St. Peter. She worked there for two years, then returned to the home of her parents who had moved from Wisconsin to Dodge County, MN. Here she met Dennis McNanney, a native of Ireland, and they were married in October 1869. They eventually had three children, Helen Mar, Arthur, and Moses. The couple moved to Brainerd, MN, were there for seven years, then moved to Bismarck, ND, and then to Montana. Mr. McNanney was involved in lumbering and railroad construction, and he died (1887) in Montana. After his death, Helen remained in the area and was hired to cook for employees of the Northern Pacific Railroad. Later, she left Montana and came to Minneapolis, working for a while as a dressmaker, and then operated a boarding house. After several years in Minneapolis, she moved west again, first to Portland, OR, and then to Tacoma, WA, where she kept another boarding house. During this time, she twice lost everything to fires. She finally returned to her old home in Dodge County, MN, and, in November 1896, married Lemon H. Tarble, a widower. They farmed land in sections 5, 6, and 8 in the northwest part of Ashland Township, near Dodge Center, MN, until 1905, when they moved into town. Helen was the author of a book, published in 1904, giving the story of her capture and escape from the Indians. During this time, she lectured on the subject of the uprising, and, for a number of years during the state fair, she had charge of the old settlers building. Mr. Tarble died in 1918. Helen died on July 2, 1921, and was survived by a daughter, a son, and three grandchildren. Her obituary mentions that, in her last few years, she was tenderly cared for by her son, Arthur J. McNanney, and "everything was done for her that a loving heart and hands could do." Her funeral was held at the Methodist Church in Dodge Center.

The "Boy Hero of Lake Shetek". When the US-Dakota War broke out in 1862, he escaped from an attack and carried his baby brother on his back to safety, covering over 50 miles in 7 days. He was only 11 years old.

He was born in 1851, the son of John Eastlick and Lavina Day, who were both born in 1833. He had four brothers: Frank, Frederick, Giles, and Johnny. The family had moved to Illinois in 1856, but found the price of land too high and moved to Minnesota the following year. By 1861, the family had settled at Lake Shetek in Murray County, Minnesota.

On the morning of Aug. 20, 1862, the settlers isolated at Lake Shetek were unaware that the US-Dakota War (or Sioux Uprising) had erupted three days earlier. Merton's mother was preparing breakfast as usual for her family and Mr. Rhodes, a boarder, when Merton came to the door and said "Charley Hatch is coming, as fast as he can run!" Lavina, thinking someone was hurt, ran to the door and asked Charley, their neighbor, what was the matter. He reported that the Indians were upon them, and "had already shot Voigt", a neighbor. Charley asked for a horse so that he could warn the other settlers.

After giving Charley a horse, the Eastlick family fled to the house of John Wright. When all the settlers arrived at the Wright's house, they decided to flee across the prairie to another settler's house. While on their way, they were overcome by the Indians in a marshy area, which later came to be known as "Slaughter Slough."

Merton's father was killed, along with many other settlers. Lavina hid in the slough with her children. She had gunshot wounds and was told by "Old Pawn", one of the Indians, that she could leave. When she stood up and started to walk away from the area, she was shot in the back. Her sons Frank, Freddy, and Giles, who had tried to follow her, were attacked and killed. Severely wounded, Lavina thrust her baby at Merton and yelled for him to go on as long as he could.

Merton hid in the area and returned to the swamp later that day with his brother. The Indians had left. Five men were still alive; the most severely wounded was the patriarch of the Lake Shetek community, Tommy Ireland. After a few hours of rest, he resolved to try to save the Eastlick boys. He told Merton to carry the baby on his back, and they would try to make it to Charley Hatch's place. However, Ireland could walk no more than several hundred yards when he collapsed. Merton looked at him with tears in his eyes, not knowing how to help him. Ireland told him there was nothing he could do but "keep on and save little Johnny". Merton gathered a pile of leaves and grass and placed them under Ireland's head as a pillow, then kissed him on the cheek. Though he was not a relative, Tommy Ireland was affectionately known as "Uncle Tommy" by the children who lived at Lake Shetek. He gave Merton directions and told him to keep walking until he found someone to take care of them. Merton lifted his 15-month old brother up on his back and started across the prairie.

Over the next several days, he carried his brother for 50 miles. They subsisted on berries and grass. Merton stayed up at night, shouting to the wolves to keep them away while his brother slept. When it rained, he laid his brother on the ground, and bent over him to protect him from the cold rain. By the seventh day, he was weak and emaciated, but still carrying his brother, headed toward New Ulm.

Meanwhile, Merton's mother was also trying to make her way to safety. Over several days, with little food and no protection from the elements, and with severe wounds, she alternatively hid and made her way slowly across the prairie. The thought that her two remaining children could still be alive kept her going. After several days, she was amazed when she saw the mail carrier, August Garzone, on his wagon, traveling his regular route from Sioux Falls to New Ulm. Having been gone a week, he was apparently unaware of the conflict between the Dakota and the white settlers. He was astonished to hear of the attacks. After assessing the extent of Lavina's wounds, he helped her into his sulky and walked along, leading the horse toward New Ulm. Along the way, they stopped at Charley Hatch's place and to their amazement encountered Tommy Ireland, still alive. The next day, after some rest and eating whatever food they could find, they all set out for New Ulm.

The following day, they approached Alomina Hurd and her two children. Alomina told Lavina that Merton was just a short distance ahead, carrying Johnny. Urging the horse along, the group soon came upon them. Merton and his baby brother had been without food for two days. Merton was emaciated and weak. Johnny was unrecognizable, ill with cholera, his face disfigured from being covered with mosquito bites that he had scratched, and his hair pulled out from the back of his head. The flesh was worn off Merton's feet, and he was so weakened and dazed that he was unable to speak for several days. With tears of joy, Lavina thanked God they had been spared, but was unable to rise from the sulky to hug Merton, and could only "press his wasted hand, and call him my dear, brave boy."

The party stopped at Mr. Brown's house. The mail carrier left for New Ulm, but was attacked by Indians. He was able to escape and returned to the Brown's house, did his best for the survivors there, who were now unable to travel, and then left for Sioux Falls, hoping to send soldiers back to rescue them. They scrounged for whatever food they could find over the next few days. Tommy Ireland, despite his wounds, decided he would try to reach New Ulm and send a party back to rescue the others. Defying all obstacles, he successfully reached New Ulm. A rescue party of some soldiers and fellow neighbors who had survived the attack picked up the survivors at the Brown's. On Sep. 5, a group of soldiers escorted the Hurds, Eastlicks, Tommy Ireland, and Mr. Wright from New Ulm to Mankato, where Lavina was finally treated for her wounds.

In 1863, Lavina and her children went to Ohio to stay with her family. During the winter, she documented their account of the Sioux Uprising. From the sale of the book, she was able to to return to Minnesota the following year, and in 1866, bought some land near Mankato. The neighbors helped her build a small frame house. In 1867, Merton built an addition-kitchen, two bedrooms and buttery. Merton learned the trade of carpentry and with that income and what was raised on the farm, the family lived comfortably.

In 1870, Lavina married Solomon Pettibone. Three months later, Solomon visited his sister in Ohio for several days. He left her place to return to Minnesota, but was never heard from or seen again. Lavina's daughter was born in August the following summer. Johnny, now 10 years of age, helped his mother care for the baby and run the household. Neighbors also helped the family.

On Aug. 19, 1873, Merton married Mary Ann Alexander, a native of Rochester, Minn., and daughter of Joseph Alexander. They settled near Rochester. They had one son, Merton William, who was born in Mankato, Minn. on May 23, 1874.

In 1875, Merton died of a pulmonary ailment in Rochester, Minn. He was only 24 years old. His mother gave this account of his death:

Sometime during the summer of 1875 Merton wrote to me telling me that he had taken a severe cold, and had been left with a cough. He wrote several letters afterward, saying that all were well; but a terrible blow awaited me on the 5th of November. I received a telegram from Rochester to "come quick, Merton is dying." Oh! What a shock. I did not faint, but I thought I should die, it was such a shock. I could not speak for some minutes; but tears, blessed tears, came to my relief, and then I seemed to realize the truth that Merton was dying. I thought perhaps I might get to Rochester in time to see him once more if I made all possible haste, and I accordingly went to Mankato that night, and took the train next morning for Rochester. How slow the train moved! It seemed as though I could go faster myself. In my imagination I could see another train that didn't lack for speed. I knew where it would stop and what passenger would go on board. I reached Rochester at one o'clock p.m. Mr. Joseph Alexander Jr., met me at the station. I did not need to ask – I felt that Merton was gone. Mary, my daughter-in-law, met me at the gate, threw her arms around me, kissed me said, "Mother –" She could say no more, and I could say nothing, neither could I shed a tear. They told me that he begged them to do all they could to keep life in him "till mother came," and he told his wife if he could see mother he would be willing to die. He died trusting in Jesus. On Sunday I followed the remains to the grave where kind hands buried the hero of Lake Shetek, my hero, the boy that carried his little brother so far and was the instrument in the hands of God in saving his life. Lavina Eastlick, OBITUARY

Mrs. Lavina Eastlick was born May 28, 1833, in the State of New York, and died in her daughter's, Mrs. Angus MacDonnell's, home in Lougheed, Alberta, October 9th, 1923. The Edmonton Journal of May 29, 1923, on occasion of her ninetieth birthday, speaks of her life in part as follows:

"Mrs. Eastlick was ninety years old yesterday. This dear little old lady is known for miles around as Grandma Eastlick, and chose to spend the eve of her years with her daughter, Mrs. Angus MacDonnell, at Groveland. Her life reads more like that of a returned veteran as she carries a bullet in her head, which she received after being shot at three times by the Sioux Indians in the massacre at Lake Shetek, Minnesota, in August of 1862, when the tribe broke out and took the 'pale face' settlements by surprise and storm. Born in New York State, U.S.A., in 1833, Mrs. Eastlick with her parents made her home in Johnsonville, Ohio, after she was one year old, and remained there until she was married to John Eastlick in 1850. Of the family circle living, there is one son, John Eastlick of Monticello, Minnesota, one daughter, Mrs. Angus MacDonnell of Groveland, Lougheed; six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren, and a nephew in Nebraska, 80 years of age. In the terrible massacre by the Sioux Indians in 1862, Mrs. Eastlick lost her husband on the battlefield. He was shot by these Indians as well as their two children. The third child was never seen or heard of. The oldest son, Merton, aged eleven years, carried Johnny, the fifteen-months-old baby, forty miles in the flight from the Indians and reached a place of safety in another white settlement where he was overtaken by his mother who had crawled around the battlefield after being left for dead by the enemy. Recovering her senses after the shooting affray, when shot three times, she crawled in the long grass to hunt for her family, when she was seen by the Indians and again brutally beaten about the head with a rifle which turned out to belong to her husband. The masses of beautiful, long, thick tresses was all that broke the force of the blows from her assailants. She was restored to her two living children by a mail driver who chanced along the road and saw her trying to crawl to a place of safety, and he took them all to a white settlement where they remained about a week until relief came from the soldiers. She remained in the hospital many weeks, and then settled in Ohio and Minnesota, working for her three children and mourning her lost ones. Mrs. Eastlick has been married three times and kept house until eight years ago. She is still enjoying good health only absenting herself four times from the dining table for over a year on account of a slight cold. She enjoys good eyesight and assists with the household mending and light sewing as well as other small chores. During the last war she busied herself with knitting for the Red Cross."

Sister Eastlick accepted the present truth in 1886 in Minnesota and joned the Mankato (Minnesota) church in 1894. She has been faithful until she was called to lay down her life. Words of comfort were spoken from the text which Sister Eastlick herself had wished to be used, namely, John 14:1.4. A goodly number of her friends followed her to her last resting place in Lougheed, Alberta.

MONUMENT TO BRAVE SETTLERS

Monument is on County Road 21, section 35 of Flora Township, Renville County, in the Middle Creek settlement where several were killed by Indians during the Sioux uprising of 1862. Minnie Buce Carrigan's parents and siblings were killed just a short distance from this monument. The monument's inscription reads: "IN MEMORY OF THE BRAVE SETTLERS WHO FELL AT THIS POINT IN THE MASSACRE OF 1862".
